With their diva, Violetta Maledetta, injured and in a wheelchair, the decision has been made to save the season with a musical instead of opera. The excited cast and chorus exit, and Violettta remains alone on stage. Knowing she will soon be replaced, a nightmare sequence ensues as she watches her name torn from marquees and posters. She sings plaintively to Bellini’s “Casta Diva.” Disturbing visions of ingénue, Felicia Singswell, surround and torment her. Her worries are realized as Felicia grabs the spotlight, singing “Cast AS Diva,” surrounded by an adoring male chorus. It seems Violetta is forgotten.
